Wizard World Texas O-Five

Couple weeks back I was able to attend my third consecutive Wizard World Texas Convention. While I don't think last year's can be beat just based on the sheer amount of creators that were on hand, this year rocked on the personal level. Everywhere I turned I met the friendliest vendors, artists, and firefly fans. Aside from their not being a whole lot of creators there a few other staples were missing: 1) Peter Mayhew aka Chewbacca did not make the trip which was unexpected since he lives in TX. But you know probably had a prior commitment. 2) The t-shirt booth that always gets my bidness, Graphitti Designs, was not there. 3) Good friends Shad and Da Janx could not make it. These factors not being in play, it had the feel of a much different convention than in years past. But different can be good.

Nate and I being the veterans of our group now, brought in two rookies. Nate brought his wife, Nikki and I brought the everfun Sparda. Nikki handled the nerdworld well and only seemed bored by the two panels we went to for Marvel and the Ultimate Avengers DVD. Sparda is no stranger to things geeky or conventiony just to things Wizard Worldy. He had a shirt made of River Tam with weapony pose on the front (from the German Serenity poster) and the simple phrase "Also...I can kill you with my brain" on the back. I was wearing my new t-shirt of the ship Serenity so we were instantly recognizeable to firefly fans who were the nicest bunch. Had great conversations with our new friends at www.shinyshirts.net who have the best Firefly/Serenity shirts in the 'verse (especially since there is no officially licensed products to speak of). Chatted lots with them and will definitely be sending them my bizness as well as referring any Firefly fans I know.

Speaking of we got to see Summer Glau and snap a few candids. She was very sweet and gracious to the fans. I wish I would have paid to meet her, get her autograph and picture with her. Especially since I found nothing else there to spend my money on. The movie, tv, the pictures I took, do not do her the justice of real life. I was for a moment or two a quivering fan boy which never happens to me I swear. So maybe it's best she didn't meet me under those conditions.

I also met the host of fanboy radio ,Scott Hinze, who was the coolest guy ever. Chatted with him for a while. He invited us to the after party (although every one was invited by flyer the verbal invite was very nice to have). I wanted to go badly but had prior commitments I felt I should keep. I was wrong. I definitely should have gone. They talked about it on the next fanboy radio and it sounds like the party was off the chain. Dj spinning while Jim Mahfood, Dave Crosland, and various other artists from the convention just drew and painted on everything and everyone. Really should have bore witness...blast! Mr Hinze introduced me to Mr Mahfood and Mr Crosland as well and they were super cool to chat and say hi while busy drawing for others.

Also have to give a shoutout to Chris Peel and Tom Martin creators of Some Big Lumberjack who were the funniest guys I have ever met who mightjust have the funniest comic I've ever seen. Thanks for literally humoring us.

Very fun day. Here's a few pictures:

Master Chief was personally out recruiting for the war against the Covenant.

Big Damn Hottie

This fast food chain has a very strict "No Walk-Up" policy for its drive thru, but fortunately there are ways to get around it.

U2

Was

Awesome

They rocked the AAC so magnificiently. The Edge is a phenom. We had pretty decent seats. We took my new Irish flag that Rachel got me for my apartment. So much fun. Bono was in an improv mood all night. Making up new lyrics. Forgetting others. The highlight for me was probably the CoeXisT white headband that Bono later turned into a blindfold looking like a POW. Just really powerful imagery going on there. CoeXisT is a piece of graphitti art that they saw somewhere in the midwest and adopted. The C is the muslim crescent, the X is the Star of David, and the T is the crucifix. He summed it best: The worst kind of fight is a family fight - Mohammed, David, Jesus, all sons of Abraham. This was all during Sunday Bloody Sunday which Bono now considers a song for the war America finds herself in. He then pulled a child out of the crowd and had him sit up on stage calling him a son of Abraham and having him lead us all in the classic "No More!" chant during Sunday. "Wipe your tears away." It inspiring how much hope and faith he has in the future. That led into a rendition of Bullet the Blue Sky that was less angry and more bluesly and dedicated to the men and women of the U.S. Military. Bono improvising "When Johnny comes marching home again" at the end.

The other big highlight of the night was Bono pulling up a dude from the audience who had an Angel of Harlem sign that said he could play. They brought him up and brought out one of Edge's acoustics and away they went. It was so awesome, not just for him and everyone watching but also because they haven't played that song all tour and may not play it again for the remainder. It's one of Rachel's faves so it was very special to hear that one. After the dude got Bono to trade sunglasses with him (!!!) he took his place in the crowd and they played With or Without You the song Rachel really hoped to hear live because she hadn't the other two times she saw them. Of course Bono pulled a girl on stage and held her while he sang it, a staple of that song live. I was cracking up at the guy behind me who upon seeing this said, "O, he's pulling out all the stops!" So it was a night full of surprises, imagery, hope, compassion, rock, and of course vertigo.
